Coffee and cowboys

I have often wondered how the cowboys of the old West brewed their coffee. In films you see them using just a battered metal jug on the fire. Did they just stir the coffee grounds into the boiling water and allow it to settle on the bottom before pouring the brew?

I do think it's a very simple procedure but have found a cowboy coffee recipe of a person who like to backpack and seems to know the difference:

Bring one quart of water to a boil in a saucepan.
Add 3/4 cup of ground coffee.
Return to boil.
Immediately remove from heat and cover.
Wait till the grounds sink (approximately 5 minutes).
Serve.

But I think cowboy coffee seems so tasty mostly because it is prepared outdoors, in a primitive vessel from no matter what grounds - let them only be fresh and tasty. That's the true recipe ;)

I think they would prepare it at home, and then just warm it up while grazing cows ;)

I always wondered what type of coffee they prefer - strong or weaker? ;)

I think they like it strong and hot - to have enough energy to guard their herd :d

I wonder, whether they drink something stronger than coffee - in order to stay awake all night long and watch their herd ;) What do you think?
