I have had the good fortune to spend a lot of time in Asia and the cafe-coffee culture is a massive part of the culture throughout. It seems on every corner of Vietnamese streets there are small, family run cafes selling their addictive wares. (I could never manage it hot but iced with that canned, sweetened milk at the bottom...bliss).

No, you're not wrong exactly. Tea is also important but it plays a different role, (for instance the tea ceremony in Japan). In my experience so far China was the place where tea was dominant. Every other Asian country I've been to favors coffee for cafe dwelling/socialising.
