Seating

Some places I've visited have cafes with large tables, nothing individual at all. The idea is that people can meet others, chat to strangers etc. Would you feel comfortable in that kind of coffee shop?

When I was in Hong Kong that is how it was. I love places like that where you can sit with new people and just chat with others. I think so many of us have become isolated.

I agree Driven. I see people look around a regular coffee shop and leave because there's no completely free table. It's a pity that people feel uncomfortable sharing their space, although I understand they may not want to chat to random strangers sometimes.

It is sad how our society has become so anti-social. Even when walking down the street people hate making eye contact. If I am in a coffee shop and I notice there are not empty tables, I ask if I can share with someone. I have never had a person say "no". So, I don't get why people are so scared to share.

While I agree with you all, there are definitely times that I sneak into a coffee shop for the specific purpose of enjoying some alone time. Often it's the only opportunity I have for some peace and quiet, and speaking to strangers while sipping my latte may not be so inviting. I can't really fault anyone for shying away from a group table.

I like coffee shops with cozy interiors and small tables in groups shattered all over the floor.

Nope, I don't like restaurants, cafes or any other place with such tables - a cafe is designed for intimacy, and not being a bazaar ;)

I think it's a great idea, especially, when you come to an unknown place, and don't know anyone - any stranger could become your friend, just be careful - not any of them would like to befriend you. ;)

I think that would be interesting to try at least once, but always sitting with strange people, without private space would be tough for me. :-(
